INDOT Prepares for Impending Winter
Storm INDIANAPOLIS - Starting at midnight, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is dispatching 65 yellow trucks to treat and plow state highways in the Indianapolis area. The full call-out of trucks will be on patrol through Saturday. INDOT maintains approximately 1,425 miles of road in and around Indianapolis, including all lanes, ramps and bridges. INDOT has been pre-treating interstates and state roads with brine, an anti-icing solution of water and salt, in preparation for the forecasted winter storm. INDOT operations staff members are continuously monitoring weather reports and adapting plans as needed. The priority is to keep roads open, maximize the mobility of the traveling public and minimize accidents due to winter traveling conditions. Trucks from the Indianapolis Subdistrict are providing around-the-clock coverage by working in alternating 12-hour shifts to monitor the situation and treat or plow roadways as necessary. Crews may be increased or decreased as conditions require. All of Indiana's interstates, U.S. highways and state roads are divided into snow routes that take INDOT plow drivers an average of two to three hours to complete. INDOT reminds drivers Ice & Snow: Take it Slow. Road conditions are typically the most dangerous when precipitation is falling and motorists are encouraged to limit travel during the storm. Motorists should also remember that many factors including shading, elevation and traffic rate can affect road conditions, causing slippery patches on otherwise clear roads. Tips for drivers and helpful winter weather links can be found online at WinterDrivingSafety.IN.gov. Road condition information can be found by visiting TrafficWise.IN.gov or dialing 800-261-ROAD (7623).
